⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character: Tiana
Age: 19
Canon: The Princess and the Frog
Canon Point: Post-Canon

Background:
  • She's Almost There

  • Personality:
This Disney Princess brings a different charm to the line of princesses by setting her in a modern world with a good head on her shoulder and no royal background already lined up for her. Tiana is a hard-working young woman struggling to make ends meet in a world where she’s constantly facing economical, gender, and even racial barriers while working towards the biggest dream she has set for herself since she was a child—owning a resturuant.

She breaks the traditional rules for what a princess is by setting out and doing something with her life rather than sitting around waiting for Mr. Right. She’s a woman who believes hard work and patience is all someone needs to get the things they want out of life and that nothing is simply handed to her on a silver platter. This, of course, changes towards the end of the movie when she realizes a balance can be achieved in working hard and enjoying everything else n life, but it doesn’t erase the fact that she believes anything can be done if someone puts their mind to it. Anything is possible so as long as the person strives for it, especially when it comes to dreaming big.

Even with so much on her plate and so little time to offer, Tiana is still a very compassionate person. While hard at work as a waitress, she’s able to pause and give concern to her customers by going above and beyond what her job expectations are, making her customers very happy by putting a smile on their usually frowning or groggy faces. She can easily overlook a person’s bad qualities—such as greed or undeserving egos—if they show even the smallest sign of having a good heart. She’s by no means a sweet and innocent woman and isn’t blind to someone’s own foolishness, but she is able to listen and make her own judgments based on what she learns.

Living in an age where women of her background are still not regarded as equal individuals, it makes it even harder for her to accomplish the things she wants. This means having to develop a thick skin for situations that would normally break a woman of her status down. She's a determined young woman, maybe even a bit too determined at times. Even when the realtors tell her that they were unable to sell her the property due to a higher bidder, it doesn’t stop her from at least still pushing for it ( or in her case making a wish that ended up putting her in a messier situation ).

Her most noteworthy talent is the fact that she's a talented cook. Able to whip up creations quickly thanks to years of learning. She's capable of fixing a boring gumbo and turning it into a masterpiece and using the bare minimum to make something delicious. She could probably even make something out of a Papou fruit if given the chance. Her years of working in the service industry have allowed her to be quick on her feet and very efficient, often while running on a very limited amount of sleep. The struggle was real.

But Tiana is not without a few personal and glaring flaws of her own. Being determined is great, but being too determined can often lead to tunnel-visioning. She has a tendency ignore everything in favor of work, sometimes at the sacrifice of her own well-being. Her determination to pursue her dream comes with the sacrifice of not having much of a life beyond work. So love, friends, and even hanging out is put aside in favor of constantly working. All work and no play makes Tiana a dull girl according to her friends, and even her own mother notes her concern for how much in life she's missing out on.

There are even moments where Tiana herself feels the weight and pressure of all her work getting nowhere and thus turning to avenues that seem quick and easy. This tends to make her a bit of a risk taker which is not necessarily a bad trait, but not really a good one either. Risks like kissing a frog who promises "riches" to open her restaurant or talking to strange men who deal with voodoo.

I mean ... what could possibly go wrong?

At the core of her being, Tiana is simply a self-assured and courageous young woman who, despite her struggles, proves that anyone can accomplish anything when they put their mind, heart, and soul into it. Whether it's serving up a hot meal or offering a listening ear, her big heart and willingness to share her love of food and music with the world says it all: she's a true Disney Princess.

    Abilities:
Tiana has no known superhuman capabilities. She's just your average, hard-working African-American living in the 1900's era of New Orleans, LA. The only experience she has with the supernatural is the fact that she was turned into a frog after the effects of a spell placed a prince morphed her into one upon kissing him.

That isn’t to say she is completely useless, however. One of Tiana’s strongest abilities is her advanced knowledge in the culinary arts. It was a natural gift flourished by her father’s encouragement and skills. She’s able to figure out what is needed in a dish just by giving it a taste test and can transform it into a masterpiece within minutes. Even when turned into a ‘slimy’ frog, this ability doesn’t stop there.

    Alignment:
Throughout the series, Tiana experiences a variety of different emotions that can easily align with her. Hate and Love (meeting Naveen), Grief and Joy (Her father, her restaurant), and even a bit of envy (her best friend achieving her dreams with a 'wish'). After the loss of her father who never lived long enough to achieve his dream, she sets out on a life goal to open this restaurant not just for herself but to finish what her father had hoped to do himself. The road is often long and often feels impossible with obstacles at every corner. At times she even falls into despair because the dream seems so far out of reach that she reduces herself to even wishing on stars.

But hope makes a rebound whenever she falls too far, reminding her that she still has her wits and talents about her to get her up and over the hurdles life throws her way. Hope pulled her through the trials and tribulations and land her not only her restaurant but even finding love. Therefore she is easily attuned to Peromei.

    "Where... where am I?"

There in the center of this new area, she stood, lost and even a little frightened. "The Shadow Man? Is this his doing?" she murmured quietly while standing to her feet, threading back a loose raven lock behind an ear while wandering about aimlessly looking at all the unusual buildings and neon-lit signs that were unfamiliar to her completely.

Dreams like this usually ended once she acknowledged they were one, but this one wasn't going away. No matter how many times she closed her eyes or pinched herself, she was still here. Eyes wide with alarm, she kept herself as calm as one can be when surrounded in an unfamiliar setting.

“I ... I don’t remember leaving the restaurant at all.” Tiana concluded quietly as she recalled her last memory, the smile of her husband who was just about to reward her with an evening kiss. And then it hit her. Delayed, yet the biggest realization to dawn on her.

"Naveen?" Was she here all alone? "Naveen, are you out there?" She called out again, moving away from the wall to wander even more in search of her husband until she finally stopped somewhere in the middle of this unknown.

    She was alone.

It was one thing to be lost and confused at the wrong side of town. It was another when you realize you were going through it utterly alone in a place so unlike the world she knew before. The air around her turned unusually murky like the feeling just after a storm rolled through. While not a sweltering heat by any means, it was certainly an uncomfortable atmosphere—damp and humid—that turned her hair just a bit curlier than usual. The unexpected fog made it a little difficult to see, yet it also concealed her grief as she allowed a few scattered tears to fall.

Yet this was no time for sitting and feeling sorry. It was a thought that kicked in suddenly when recalling when last she was thrown into an unexpected environment. This was different, yes, and unlike anything she experienced. Yet when did that ever stop her before? It didn't, and this too would also be a challenge defeated. Pain and grief melted away and was replaced with a determined countenance. Voodoo or just eerie circumstances, this wasn't going to stop her from finding her way home. There were people important to her waiting back home, and at least this time she had the advantage of not being a frog.

"Well, they better be prepared for me,” Tiana stated to no one as she gazed forward, the fog around her clearing as the humidity began to clear.

    "I'm going home."
